Bretagne's Best Day

With the 14th anniversary of 9/11 being last week, I wanted to share a story I found about one of the rescue dogs who searched Ground Zero after the attacks.

Bretagne, a golden retriever and her handler, Denise Corliss, were both members of Texas Task Force 1, which is an urban search and rescue team that goes to disaster sites to search to survivors.

Out of 100 search and rescue dogs sent to Ground Zero, Bretagne is the last one living. In honor of her 16th birthday and all of her efforts during that time, BarkPost and Hotel1 flew Bretagne and her handler to NYC and treated them to an amazing birthday weekend!

During their stay they had many activities lined up for them, including a visit to Times Square to see a billboard thanking Bretagne for all of her efforts. She enjoyed a day at the Hudson Dog Park where she was given a "bone to the dog park" (doggy equivalent to a key to the city). She ended the weekend with a surprise birthday party at the hotel with even more presents, including a cobblestone that is now located on the plaza of the 9/11 memorial.

Bretagne has since retired from her rescue efforts, however, she still works as a service dog helping students with special needs learn how to read.

It is amazing to see the amount of support and comfort these dogs can give during such difficult times  and it is heartwarming to see their efforts acknowledged and appreciated!
